How to Make Your Makeup Look Professional (Even If You’re Not a Makeup Artist)

Many women want their makeup to look polished and professional — but assume that professional results require a professional artist and a whole pile of expensive makeup.

The truth is that professional-looking makeup comes from some really easy techniques and applying a just few products in the right way — not using more makeup.

As a master television and celebrity makeup-artist working with stars, icons and everyday women, I’ve know that the simplest techniques create the most polished results.

You don’t need dozens of products. You need the right method.

In this guide you’ll learn:

The small techniques that make makeup look professional

How to avoid a heavy or overdone look

How professionals create polished results

How to simplify your routine

1. Start With Clean Skin

Professional looking makeup always starts with the skin as the canvas.

Skin should be clean and free from residue so makeup can glide evenly over the skin.

Heavy creams and primers usually prevent makeup from being worked into the skin blending properly.

So the less product on the skin from the start means makeup can be massaged into the skin and last all day

2. Use Less Foundation (but higher coverage) - Not More

One of the biggest professional secrets is usingless foundation than you think.

High coverage foundation used sparingly and spread far - looks more natural than light coverage applied heavily.

Spread a very small amount evenly across the skin using a dense foundation brush.

This creates a polished natural finish without the heavy look.

3. Blend Until You Can’t See Where Makeup Starts or ends

Professional makeup always looks seamless.

Blending is what separates amateur makeup from polished makeup.

Edges should fade naturally into the skin.

Pay particular attention to:

Foundation edges

Blush edges

Eyeshadow edges

4. Define the Eyes Simply

Eyes do not need complicated techniques to look professional.

Use a darker color at the lash line and on any “fleshy” areas (such as hooded eyes)

The softer the brush used, the more instantly blendedit will be.

Well blended eyeliner adds definition to the eyes, mimics thicker lashes and stops eyes from “disappearing”

5. Restore Radiance With Blush

Foundation removes natural colour from the face.

Blush restores life and a healthy look.

Place blush where you want your cheeks to appear.

Softly blend using an outward spriral mostion.

6. Check in Different Lighting

As a frofessional makeup artist, I always check my work in all different light.

Makeup can look different in:

Natural light

 Soft light

Bright lght

 Night light vs daylight

This simple habit dramatically improves results.

Final Professional Tip

Professional-looking makeup is created by how you apply it (technique and blending) - just like a painting  — not by the number of products you use.

Small improvements in method create hgi-impact in results.
